The Myanmar Ministry of Planning and Finance Holds Workshop on Global Practices in SDG Realisation

Across Southeast Asia, the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) remains steadfast in its dedication to successfully implement the objectives of Sustainable Development Goals into national policy.

On the 30th of August, the Myanmar Ministry of Planning and Finance (MOPF), in association with the Hanns Seidel Foundation and the Asia-Europe Foundation, held a workshop dedicated to the discussion of international practices in the implementation of the SDGs. H.E. U Set Aung, Deputy Minister of Planning and Finance opened the workshop, reiterating that only by identifying implementable, time-bound programmes Myanmar can overcome the budget constraints to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. He also presented on the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP). The MSDP contains of three pillars and five goals:

• Peace, National Reconciliation, Security and Good Governance
• Economic Stability, Strengthened Macroeconomic Management

The MSDP goes hand in hand with the SDGs. In order to achieve them, ministries have to work together and harmonize the processes. He highlighted the importance of international organizations as well as the private sector in the implementation process. In his opening remarks, Achim Munz, country representative Hanns Seidel Foundation, stressed the importance of the SDGs in fostering a more sustainable future. He emphasized that wide participation by various actors, including civil society, is vital for a successful implementation.

The workshop gathered around 150 representatives from the Myanmar Ministry of Planning and Finance (MOPF), line-ministries, agencies, research institutes, civil society and NGOs. Delegates from Lao and Vietnam shared their experience in drafting the Voluntary National Review (VNR) which was presented recently at the High-Level Political Forum in July 2018 and in developing an SDG monitoring framework. Mr Simon Olsen, ADB consultant, also shared his views from ADB’s regional project on environment-related SDGs. On this occasion, the Asia-Europe Foundation also presented the Burmese version of their publication “Implementation Guide for the Sustainable Development Goals”.
