The monitoring framework for Vietnam's sustainable development goals at finalization stage

Since the adoption of the SDGs at the UN’s General Assembly in September 2015, the Vietnamese Government has made efforts to demonstrate its commitment to the Agenda 2030. In a continuation effort with the promulgation of the National Action Plan for Agenda 2030 in May 2017, the presentation of its first Voluntary National Review in July 2018, Vietnam is now seeking to complete the monitoring framework for the VSDGs by finalizing the statistic indicators for the targets set out by the National Action Plan.

On 7th November 2018, HSF and Vietnam General Statistic Office co-hosted a Consultative Workshop on the statistic indicators for the VSDGs. The workshop was attended by almost a hundred participants from 17 related line ministries, research institutes and international organizations. The representative from related line ministries provided valuable comments and inputs to the drafting team. Prior to this workshop, several consultative workshops were organized in the provinces with provincial statistic office. Subsequent to this workshop, the proposed indicators will be sent to all related line ministries and relevant international organizations. The finalized list of indicators will be mainstream into a circular to be issued by the Vietnam Ministry of Planning and Investment early 2019.

Implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals

The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action based on five themes including: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership. It was approved at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015 in New York City and come into effect in January 2016. The Agenda is set out with a period of fifteen-years and is made out of seventeen SDGs which have been nationalized into 115 Viet Nam SDGs.

Since then Vietnam recorded a huge progress in the past few years and has become a lower middle income country and could reduce poverty. Vietnam is confident that it will succeed in implementing the 2030 Agenda for current and future generations, but to achieve all the goals it requires the partnership of governments, private sector, civil society and citizens.

During the Conference on the National Action Plan to reach Vietnam´s national SDGs, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam clarifies;

"The government will mobilize all resources and prioritize the implementation of social-economic tasks towards sustainable development.
