During the three-day conference, which took place online for the first time due to Corona, international experts, relevant stakeholder from various sectors, business representatives, consumers, NGOs, research institutions and many more discussed chances, challenges and different experiences and suitable approaches for achieving the SDG12 on SCP.
Main topics of the conference were Sustainable Garments, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Single-Use Plastic, Plastic Pollution and Inclusive Food Value Chain as way of transition to Circular Economy (CE).
These topics were also discussed during the three online seminars preceding the Annual Conference.
One of the key messages of this year’s Annual Conference was the crucial role and responsibility of consumers, producers and policy makers in improving global sustainable consumption and production patterns. Everyone’s daily choice can make a difference in the fight against AMR, Single-Use Plastic as well as in protecting the environment and supporting sustainable garments. In turn, consumption behaviors can be changed by providing different options and by implementing political regulations on SCP.
ASEF Deputy Executive Director, Ambassador Leon Faber also emphasized that despite the joint efforts of numerous stakeholders around the world, there are still many more steps to be taken to successfully achieve SDG12.
The conference once again made it clear how important cooperation and the exchange of ideas, experiences and innovations between Europe and Asia are in order to enable inclusivity and sustainability and to promote the implementation of the Agenda 2030.
Markus Ferber, MEP and Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation emphasized in his opening speech that especially in such challenging times, which are characterized by the enormous effects of Covid-19, international exchange and dialogue on topics with a long-term impact such as SCP, are important and valuable.
Participants from almost all the ASEM countries took part in the central sessions and contributed to conversations and discussions about sustainable development.
The outcomes of the three days will be further elaborated in a Conference Report and disseminated to policy makers for achieving SDG12.
