Launch of the Country Report 2021: Environmental Policy in Vietnam

While the world leaders were gathering together in Glasgow for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), many researchers from different universities and research institutes in Vietnam and Germany joined a lively discussion on key environmental issues and environmental policy in Vietnam within the framework of the hybrid launch of the 2nd Country Report co-organised by Hanns Seidel Foundation Vietnam, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) – Vietnam National University (VNU), and the Justus-Liebig University Gießen (JLU).

After the successful publication of the first volume of the Country Report series, HSF continued supporting the joint research project led by the USSH/VNU and the JLU in compiling and publishing the second volume focusing on environmental policy in Vietnam. Country Report series sets to provide semi-annual reviews on important social and environmental issues in Vietnam from different perspectives. The volume was contributed by experienced researchers from renowned universities and research institutes in Vietnam and Germany, among them the USSH/VNU, Hanoi University of Mining and Geology, Mekong Development Research Institute, JLU, and Hamburg University.

On 09th November 2021, HSF cooperated with the JLU and USSH in organising a hybrid launch of the Country Report. At the launch, the Director of the Institute of Strategy, Policy on Natural Resources and Environment of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, a senior government and policy advisor, a representative from UNDP Vietnam, resident representative of HSF Vietnam, and lecturers and researchers from universities in Vietnam and Germany made several comments on the Country Report and mentioned various environmental issues and relevant policies in Vietnam. Not only pressing issues such as plastic waste management and industrial emissions, but also emerging issues such as urban heat island, rural waste management were discussed. Furthermore, the experts also highlighted significant roles of academic research and discussions in addressing climate crisis and proposed some recommendations for policy and research to tackle environmental issues in Vietnam.

The launch was live-streamed on the Facebook Page of HSF (in English) and that of the USSH (in Vietnamese). Due to the pandemic-related restriction on the number of people in one room, only 26 participants were were able to participate in the offline discussion at the venue at the USSH, while more joined the discussion online with more than 3,000 people watching the livestreamed videos on 2 separate channels. Particularly, the online viewers posed many questions to the researchers, policy makers and representatives from international organisations at the event regarding changes in environmental policy in Vietnam in recent years, roles of the community and different stakeholders in environmental protection and biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness and environmental behaviour of people in Vietnam, urban heat island effect, and the development of renewable energy in Vietnam.
