On 30th November, more than 100 experts from relevant ministries, research institutes and think-tanks, private sector, and representatives from 12 provinces of the Mekong Delta region gathered together in Can Tho Province to discuss implications of current global challenges for promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Vietnam with a special focus on the Mekong Delta region. The conference provided a platform for diverse stakeholders to exchange information, share experiences, and come up with policy recommendations for the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam to grasp opportunities and take on challenges of new international economic integration trends.
In his opening remarks, Mr Michael Siegner – Resident Representative of HSF Vietnam highlighted some major challenges to global trade and investment, particularly the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions and Russia’s war in Ukraine. In addition, he mentioned digitalisation as a potent driver of economic integration by “facilitating participation in global value chains, and improving market access for products and Vietnamese enterprises”.
In agreement with Mr. Siegner, Dr Vo Tri Thanh - Chairman for the Vietnamese Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation (VNCPEC) – emphasised the importance of digitalisation for economic growth. Besides, he also listed some challenges of digitalisation such as the cost of digital transformation and data protection. Other topics that were thoroughly discussed in the conference included the implementation of Free Trade Agreements (FTA), in the Mekong Delta region, and solutions for attracting investment – particularly FDI and enhancing competitiveness of local businesses.
