Promoting Community Oriented Policing and Human Rights

From 6 to 13 June 2022, the Hanns Seidel Foundation Thailand (HSF), together with the Department of Special Investigations (DSI) and the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), organized the “Training in Psychology and Interrogation Techniques in Special Cases”.

Multiple Thai and international experts from the United States of America, Australia, and Norway shared their knowledge and experiences on the issues concerning forensic interviews, including legal and psychological theories and best practices. The objectives of the training are the enhance the efficiency of DSI inquirers and ensure compliance with international human rights standards. The training is also contributing to the promotion of many aspects of the Community Oriented Policing Philosophy among Thai law enforcement officers.

The training was especially focused on forensic interviews involving the child and youth. To this end, the speakers and participants had the chance to exchange opinions on various topics such as human cognition and the functions of human memory in different age groups; and legal and psychological perspectives on the participation of the child and youth in forensic interviews.

Case Studies on Interrogative Techniques in Special Cases and Suspect Interviewing and Investigative Management

Presentations were given on several different topics, such as:

- Interviewing according to international human rights standards.

- Community oriented policing and interviewing of the child and youth in criminal and special investigation

The participants also took part in practical workshops in a form of case study simulations both individually and as in groups.
