Asia in Review (AiR) - Online panel discussion on New Authoritarianisms in Comparative Perspectives

The Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG), with the cooperation between the Asian Governance Foundation (AFG) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), organized the online panel discussion on “New Authoritarianisms in Comparative Perspectives” on 6 November 2020 in correspondence with the world’s political situations.

On Friday, 6th November 2020, 2.00 p.m. – 4.45 p.m. (Bangkok time), the German – Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG), the Asian Governance Foundation (AGF) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), Thailand, cooperated in organizing an online panel discussion via Facebook livestream on the topic “New Authoritarianisms in Comparative Perspectives.”

The speakers of this event included professors and scholars in the political field from many countries: Prof. Dr. Gábor Halmai from the Department of Law, European University Institute in Florence, Dr. Adam Bodnar from the Polish Human Rights Commission, Mario Gomez from the International Center of Ethnic Studies (ICES) in Colombo, Prof. Dr. Mark Thompson from the Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong, and Prof. Dr. Jinghan Zeng from the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, Lancaster University. They came to discuss together about the rise of New Authoritarianism in Europe and Asia at the moment and about the fall of democracy, especially in Asian countries such as Sri Lanka.

The participants of this event were Thai and foreign people who were interested in politics in Europe and Asia. They gained a lot of information about the New Authoritarianism in comparative aspects not only in political field, but also in international relations, philosophical, legal and ethnic fields. There were some questions raised and answered. Different opinions were also exchanged, which helped further current knowledge about the world’s political trend and enhance resolutions for maintaining and strengthening democratic system both in Europe and Asia.
