Description

As Thailand did not go through a nationalist struggle but had to confront the growing communist threats after World War II, a strongly centralized system of political and ideological rule was adopted and continued amidst economic modernization. Local government was to some degree strengthened by national democracy elements especially during the start of the 2000s, but with two military coups in 2006 and 2014, the local government stepped backward. The transitional period from an unresponsive system to a responsive one has been a long process in every state, but will it take longer in a once semi-colonial state with a long period of political and cultural benefits for the few?
