Working Group on MP’s Role in Protecting Human Rights and Strengthening Democracy

The Hanns Seidel Foundation and the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights hope that at the end of this series of discussions, a working group of MPs consisting of like-minded MPs who are passionate about human rights and democracy will be established. We believe that such gatherings will help strengthen their mandate and consolidate their endeavors in ensuring human rights in Thailand as well as in ASEAN.

The participants in this event exchanged their opinions regarding the roles of MPs and possible strategies for protecting human rights and strengthening democracy both in Thailand and in the region. Among other issues discussed during the event, the following issues have been identified as topics of common interest for participating political parties: the new draft law restricting NGOs; the so-called Progressive Liquor Act; and the political participation of young Thais.

The participants reaffirmed that establishing a working group of MPs would buttress their cross-parties cooperation and maximize the chances for political parties to reach a consensus on issues of common interest. They expressed wishes to participate in the working group in the future again.
