The Training Workshop on Domestic Solid Waste Classification Education, in accordance with the Law on Environmental Protection 2020, was co-chaired by Mr. Michael Siegner, Resident Representative of Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in Vietnam, and Assoc.Prof.Dr. Nguyen Dinh Tho, Director General of the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE). The workshop involved representatives from Ninh Binh Department of Education and Training, eight districts of Ninh Binh, and primary school teachers. Expert speakers covered various topics related to domestic waste classification, including guidelines for education through interactive videos, online learning systems, the importance of waste segregation, and technical guidelines for waste sorting. A focus was placed on the integration of digital technology in education, aligning with the Prime Minister's approved plan for National Digital Transformation.

In the afternoon session, the workshop featured presentations on the responsibilities of stakeholders in waste classification and measures for treatment. Participants engaged in group discussions on topics such as the suitability of digitalised learning formats for primary students, applicability of online learning systems for waste classification. Additionally, post-workshop discussions with the Education and Training Department of Ninh Binh Province explored the possibility of implementing waste classification teaching via videos in primary schools across the region. Teachers expressed readiness to integrate this teaching approach into their schools. Overall, the workshop and subsequent discussions have a broader objective of providing practical foundations for developing educational materials on domestic waste classification that can be integrated into education frameworks throughout Vietnam. This will actively bring up the involvement of relevant stakeholders to assess the status quo of environmental policy tools and their implementation as outlined in LEP 2020. As a result, the programme can generate valuable policy recommendations for potential amendment of the law.
