Thai-Barometer: Where does the Thai Party System go?

On March 31, 2022, the Hanns Seidel Foundation, together with the Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG), co-hosted an online panel discussion titled “Thai-Barometer: Where does the Thai Party System go?”

Panelists discussing about the Thai Party System

The discussion took place against the backdrop of the parliamentary debate on the new election act following the amendment of the constitution which will likely abolish the so-called Mixed-member Proportional Representation (MMP) and turned Thailand back to the combination of party list seats and constituency seats (100 : 400) in the house of representatives.  Moreover, this colossal turn of the Thai political party system comes in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic's socioeconomic consequences, as well as the country's declining social trust and a slow burning crisis of identity.

The panelists include some of the greatest minds in Thai politics, namely:

  • Abhisit Vejjajiva, Former Prime Minister of Thailand and Former Leader of the Democrat Party
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr., Bhokin Bhalakula, Chairman of the Strategy Committee on Driving Country Forward of Thai Sang Thai party and former President of the Thai Parliament
  • Nikorn Chamnong, Member of the House of Representatives, Director of the Chartthaipattana Party and Former Deputy Minister of Transport
  • Assoc. Prof., Somchai Srisuttiyakorn, Director of the Institute for Politics and Elections Research at Rangsit University and former Election Commissioner of Thailand
  • Sutin Klungsang, Member of the House of Representatives, Deputy Leader of the Phuethai Party and Chief Opposition Whip
