New Publication
Shades of Federalism, Volume 2 in Myanmar and English

We proudly present the latest publication: “Shades of Federalism, Volume 2”, published by 50 Shades of Federalism and the Hanns Seidel Foundation Myanmar.

HSF

The publication is written in Myanmar and English and can be read simultaneously side-by-side, with the pages right next to each other. “Shades of Federalism, Volume 2” includes five articles written by international experts on federalism. It is designed to provide short and comprehensive introductions on different aspects – or “shades” of federalism. Whatever the reader’s academic or educational background is, no previous knowledge on the topic is needed to enjoy these articles and it is a perfect first step on the way to learn about the broad field of federalism.

Excerpt from the preface:
“In contrast to Volume 1, which focused on the theory of federalism, and many theoretical and methodological elements of this rather complex political idea, Volume 2 focuses on a number of country case studies. As will be seen, each of these cases is different, experimenting with their own version of federalism, their own challenges, and their own historical experiences. This is an important lesson for the federal debate in Myanmar. There is no such thing as a perfect model of federalism. The American system, as the oldest federal system in the world is often mentioned as an ideal-type system, but this has been put into question when taking into account the current insolvency crisis in California, the ongoing debates about the death penalty, and of course the election of Donald Trump as President. Likewise, Switzerland is often listed as an example to follow.”

The short contributions in this volume look at some of the case studies of federal states. These include study on India, Bosnia, Belgium, Spain and Nigeria.

50 Shades of Federalism is a project established in October 2017 at Canterbury Christ Church University to help inform debate about many issues related to the topic of ‘federalism’. Articles, written by some of the leading scholars and practitioners in the field, will be published on a weekly basis. Having identified five main themes – Case Studies, Conflict Resolution, Diversity Management, Policies and Theory – the central aim of this project is to provide succinct, easily accessible, high quality research articles free of charge.

This is the second volume of articles - more will follow. We will support the translation and publication of all the core articles of 50 Shades of Federalism in the future.

Stay tuned for Volume 3 coming at the end of this year! You can find the link to the publication below. Feel free to write us if you would like to receive a hard copy!
