Seminar on Federalism at the Shan Literature and Culture Hall

The Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) in cooperation with the Kyun Ta Htaung Myae Foundation organised a Seminar on Federalism at the Shan Literature and Culture Hall in Taunggyi, Southern Shan State.

More than 70 participants, including officials of the Shan State Government such as the Finance Minister, Ethnic Affair Minister, regional level GAD, representatives from governmental departments, member of JMC and representatives from CSOs attended the seminar.

U Sai Hlone Tit (Minister of Finance) gave the opening remarks and Mr. Achim Munz, Resident Representative of HSF Myanmar provided an overview on the Foundation’s activities on Federalism in Myanmar. Daw Nang Wah Nu, Director of Kyun Ta Htaung Myae Foundation, explained the objective of the seminar.

Duwa Zote Daung, Minister of Kachin Ethnic Affairs, presented his view on the historical background and process of the Panglong Agreement. Dr. Soeren Keil, the international expert supported by HSF, presented and discussed the key terms and definitions of Federalism, Nation Building and State Building. Daw Nang Wah Nu also shared a presentation on the process and historical activities referring to the Federal Process and Panglong Agreement from the perspective of the Shan State as well as a comparison of the 1947 and 2008 constitutions.
