Supporting a people-oriented parliament
Launch of Parliamentary Education Materials in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon

On 03.12 and 07.12.2018 the parliamentary education materials were launched in Myanmar’s capital and in Yangon. These materials aim to improve the knowledge of both citizens and the parliamentary staff about the importance of parliaments and the role and responsibilities of parliamentarians.

Myanmar Parliaments and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) celebrated together with over 250 Members of Parliament the launch of the 12 publications and public relation products in Nay Pyi Taw on 3rd December. These publication have been elaborated by the Myanmar Union Level Hluttaw with the support of HSF and will be used as parliamentary education materials by the Myanmar Parliaments.

The opening remarks of the launch were made by H.E. U T Khun Myat, Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and Pyithu Hluttaw, H.E. U Tun Tun Hein, Deputy Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, Pyithu Hluttaw and JCC Chairman, German Ambassador Dorothee Janetzke-Wenzel and Resident Representative of HSF, Achim Munz.

All the speakers highlighted the importance of political education and role of parliament to communicate closely with the citizens. The educational material was also launched in Yangon on 7th December. After opening remarks by Achim Munz a panel discussion on “A people-oriented parliament” followed. U Ba Myo Thein (Yangon - 5) & Dr. Maung Maung (Yangon – 6) from Amyotha Hluttaw as well as U Maung Maung Oo (Inn Sein Constituency), U Pyone Cho (Daw Bon Constiutency) and U Nay Myo Htet (Kyauktada Constiuency) shared their experience on engaging with their constituencies and other stakeholders at Inya Lake Hotel.

HSF has been cooperating with Union-level Parliaments on public relations and communication since 2016. The cooperation aims to strengthen the Union Parliaments’ approach to be more people-oriented. The project also includes support from and exchange with the German Bundestag and Bundesrat. The project is financed by the German Foreign Affairs Office.
