HSF supports Myanmar Delegation to attend the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meetings in Luang Prabang

Between 5th and 9th May the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meetings were held in Luang Prabang, Laos. As ASEAN Chair for 2016 Laos hosts all official ASEAN meetings this year.

The meetings included the ASEAN Senior Official’s Meeting, ASEAN Plus Three Senior Official’s Meeting, the East Asia Summit Senior Official’s Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum Senior Official’s Meeting. The related meetings were chaired by H.E. Alounkeo Kittikhoun, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office of Lao PDR and attended by delegates from all ten ASEAN Member States as well as representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat.

A delegation from Myanmar led by Permanent Secretary of the ASEAN Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) represented Myanmar during these official meetings with the support of the Hanns Seidel Foundation. Being able to attend these meetings is crucial for Myanmars’ Senior Officials in order to discuss ASEAN related matters with their counterparts from the other member states.

The purpose of the Senior Official’s Meetings is to prepare discussions and negotiations for the Foreign Ministers’ and Heads of State Meetings during the ASEAN Summit 2016. During the related meetings the senior officials discussed ways to effectively implement the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, particularly the ASEAN Political-Security Community Blueprint 2025, which was adopted by the 27th ASEAN Summit in November 2015. The Meeting also discussed the implementation of the Recommendations of the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on strengthening the ASEAN Secretariat and Reviewing the ASEAN Organs, the applications to accede to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), external relations, review of the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN’s Centrality and other issues related to the ASEAN Community.

During the ASEAN Regional Forum Senior Officials’ Meeting the delegates also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest and concern particularly challenges in the Asia Pacific region and the world at large, including natural disasters, climate change, terrorism, transnational crime, epidemics, irregular migration, trafficking in persons as well as developments in various parts of the world such as developments in the Middle East, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Korean Peninsula and South China Sea, among others.
