Promoting SCP in ASEAN Countries
ECOTHON in Indonesia 2023

Ecothon - the annual competition for promising sustainable business ideas in ASEAN countries - was co-organised by the ASEM SMEs Eco-Innovation Center (ASEIC) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation Vietnam (HSF) in Indonesia. This is the third competition of the Ecothon 2023 series, following the success of Ecothon in Lao PDR and the Philippines.

HSF

The third competition of the Ecothon 2023 series – hosted by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups of the Republic of Korea, and co-organised by ASEIC and HSF – took place in Indonesia with the support of Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs of The Republic of Indonesia, and the Local Enablers.

The competition started with an intense online training course organised for Ecothon participants in three countries, namely Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines. During the course, international experts shared their multi-facetted, in-depth knowledge, ranging from understanding SDGs to the fundamentals of business model development to the intricacies of regulatory compliance, investor relations and effective public speaking skills – a broad spectrum of essential areas to successfully market a sustainable and progressive business idea. Further on, the participants were offered individual coaching and mentoring sessions with international and local experts to elevate their business strategies and concepts to a new level.

First prize winner of Ecothon in Indonesia 2023

HSF

Ecothon 2023 came to a successful Demo Day on 2nd September with 13 finalists presenting their business strategies and products, which were polished-up through the training, coaching and mentoring sessions of the competition. Plana impressively won the first place for their business model of producing sustainable wood substitutes for construction from plastic waste and rice husk. Second prize went go to Alga Bioteknologi Indonesia who produced high-quality products from spirulina cultivated in palm oil mill effluent medium. Finally, third price was awarded to Aither Indonesia who produces microalgae-based air purifiers. Plana, Alga Bioteknologi Indonesia, and Aither Indonesia will join Ecothon winners from Lao PDR and the Philippines  at the Global Startup Festival COMEUP 2023 to pitch their sustainable business ideas to potential investors and experts from around the world in November in Seoul.
