At the workshop, representatives from the ISPONRE, relevant ministries, enterprises, research institutes as well as international and local organisations presented an overview of legal framework for plastic waste management and the status quo of plastic waste management in Vietnam. On the one hand, the experts acknowledged considerable efforts of the Vietnamese government in the last decade in improving its legal framework, developing and implementing a national action plan for plastic waste management, and integrating regulations on plastic waste management in the planning for sectoral and regional development. On the other hand, they also admitted that Vietnam is still faced with various difficulties in managing plastic waste, and gave several policy recommendations for a more effective reduction, separation, collection, and management of plastic waste.
Summarizing experts’ opinions during the discussion session, the Workshop chair - Dr Nguyen Dinh Tho, ISPONRE’s Deputy General highlighted the problem of household single-use plastic consumption and the crucial role of interest and economic mechanism in encouraging individuals and enterprises to act in compliance with regulations on plastic waste management in Vietnam.
Plastic waste management is an important link in the transition to circular economy and achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Vietnam. HSF has been closely collaborating with research institutes and agencies in several projects on these three critical and challenging issues as part of the fulfilment of our commitment to promoting sustainable development in Vietnam.
