Climate-Induced Migration in Vietnam

Interview with Associate Prof. Le Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Dragon Institute, cooperation partner of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Vietnam.

The Hanns Seidel Foundation conducted the following interview with Associate Professor Le Anh Tuan, Deputy Director of the DRAGON Institute for Climate Change in August 2017. This Research Institute based at Can Tho University has been a partner with HSF for over 6 years.  The interview seeks to explore a relationship between climate change and migration trends in the Mekong Delta, which is among the most vulnerable regions to climate change in the world. The majority of the Mekong population relies heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. Sea level rise and saline intrusion have had a severe impact on the economic activity of the Delta. In November 2017, the Vietnamese Government promulgated a resolution on sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in response to climate change. This resolution aims to help the region cope with climate-related challenges and to protect vulnerable population groups.
