Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development

The Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) supported 2 participants from the Ministry of Planning & Finance and the Ministry of Natural Resources & Environmental Conservation to attend the annual Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development (APLP) at the Tongji University in Shanghai.

The leadership programme took place between the 18th and 22nd of September 2017. The APLP was co-hosted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Tongji University and aimed for capacity-building for emerging leaders from the Asia Pacific Region on holistic sustainability thinking and evidence based approaches for effective action.

2017 marks the 14th year of the Leadership Programme that has attracted more than 400 emerging leaders from 42 countries. The claim of this year’s programme “Leading for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals” focused on the human, environmental and social/ economic role in promoting sustainable development.

The 5 days lasting programme included interactive panel discussions, think tank/lab sessions, case studies on environmental health, plans on how to educate for a sustainable future and a whole day trip to Eco-Chongming Island where participants encountered the National Agricultural Facility and Planning Exhibition Center.

According to the participants they benefited from the experiences of the experts and the exchange with participants from other countries. In particular they gained insight in the field of environmental health, environmental ethics, human and social values, chemical management, climate change, education policies and practices. Furthermore, they learnt about the importance of the relationship between leadership and sustainable development. They said it has been an “unforgettable, invaluable and very useful programme” and that they try to “apply the experience from this programme in the place of management and administration” of their occupation.

The HSF thanks the two participants for joining the APLP! We hope that the participants will further strive for an implementation and promotion of sustainable development in Myanmar and actively engages in the ASEAN community.
