Meeting on Tourism
16th Thandaung Gyi Tourism Development Working Group Meeting

The 16th Thandaung Gyi Tourism Development Working Group (TTDWG) meeting took place in Thandaung Gyi, Kayin State on April 30th 2019. Coordinated by the Myanmar Responsible Tourism Institue (MRTI) and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF), various topics were discussed sharing one goal: to foster community development by sustainably increasing the number of tourists.

The stakeholders shared their experiences with tourism in Thandaunggyi

One of the debated topics was how waste management could be supported by collecting entrance fees for the development fund. Annual tree planting activities in the rainy season were suggested as a means to conserving the environment. In addition, the idea came up to rather use leaves instead of plastic for packaging in general.

Local products – such as bamboo products and coffee – were planned to be produced for sale. This would go hand in hand with manufacturing trainings for the community. Furthermore, ideas for the implementation of a tourist information center were discussed. For example, how effectiveness could be improved by employing one person permanently responsible. Moreover, it was suggested to set up a Dos and Don’ts signboard for visitors in order to show them how to behave in a culturally appropriate way in the local environment. Finally, this year the Thandaung Gyi Mountain Run will likely take place in the second week of February 2019. TTDWG members were also informed about and will actively join in the upcoming 4th national conference on community and tourism (NCCT) in Loikaw on 6th – 8th June 2019 to share their experiences and learn new ideas from different stakeholders.
