As a regional cooperation between the Hanns Seidel Foundation offices in South-East Asia, a two day Regional Conference on the Role of Women in the Police Force was organised in Bangkok.

This was the first Regional Conference of its kind, focusing primarily on women in the police force. Women from police forces of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar were attending the conference.

The leading international resource persons for the conference were Wolfgang Sommer, President of the Bavarian Police in Germany and Police Director Gerd Enkling, who also heads the formal education programme of the Bavarian Police. Each of the police forces were presenting on their perspectives on the role of women in their respective police forces.

Key discussions at the conference focused on the prevalent gap between the participation of women and men in the police force, the stereotyping of female officers to specific roles and duties and the limited extend of female assignment in command and supervisory roles.
