Mr. Achim Munz, Resident Representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) met with the Hon. Speakers of the Hluttaws of the Republic of Myanmar H.E. U Win Myint, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw and H.E. U Aye Thar Aung Deputy Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw.

During the first meeting, H.E. U Aye Thar Aung praised HSF on their cooperation between the Amyotha Hluttaw and the support of the capacity building of the administrative staff. He noted that the Hluttaw is still very young and is therefore very eager to gain more experiences though capacity building and exchanges with other parliaments. It was stressed during the meeting, how important it is for a country in the transformation process to democracy to reach out to the people and to educate them on the functions and importance of parliament within the democratic system. The discussions also focused on the Foundations initiatives regarding peace and federalism and the important role of the Amyotha Hluttaw to represent the nationalities of Myanmar. The meeting concluded with the handing over of the publications that where jointly developed with Hluttaw staff.

H.E. U Win Myint, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw welcomed Mr. Achim Munz and highlighted the joint cooperation between the Pyithu Hluttaw and the HSF in the past year. Discussions regarding the Hluttaw brochure focused on the distribution and target groups of the publications and the need for political education in schools and the need to train teachers in the topic. The Hluttaw brochure is a first step for the Hluttaw to reach out to the people and inform and educate them about the Myanmar political system and the processes of the parliament. The topic of peace and federalism as well as the potential upcoming Union Peace Conference were also discussed. H.E. U Win Myint stressed that the country seeks the path of political evolution and not a political revolution. He also highlighted repeatedly that Myanmar aspires to be a democratic and federal country in the future.
