Hanns Seidel International Federalism Days in Munich

In the fifth edition of the HSF International Federalism Days that took place in Bavaria’s capital Munich, 80 experts from 20 countries discussed “Federalism – a multidimensional perspective”.

A Myanmar delegation also participated in the Federalism Days. Maran Ja Seng Hkawn, Member of the Kachin State Parliament was also part of the opening panel discussion “are states the better nation states?”. Other members of the delegation included Salai Ngun Lian Sang (Asang) from CDES, Saw Kapi from SIPP, Nan Aye Aye Thwe from ENAC and Dr. Lwin Lwin Wai from Insight Research Corner. Aung Soe Min and Achim Munz from HSF Myanmar are accompanying the delegation.

The heart of the International Federalism Days 2019 were three thematic workshops. The workshops address Fiscal Federalism and Financial Relations, Intergovernmental Relations: Institutions and Processes and Local Government and Governance. The workshops were led by the leading federalism experts and the participants have to engage with presentations and discussions. The Federalism Days were concluded with a field visit to the nearby town of Bad Staffelstein. This included a meeting with the mayor to investigate the challenges and possibilities of the role of communities in the federal system of Germany.
