Working Group on MP’s Role in Protecting Human Rights and Strengthening Democracy

On 30 November 2021, the ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights, in cooperation with the Hanns Seidel Foundation, held the first out of a series of four discussion sessions on MP’s Role in Protecting Human Rights and Strengthening Democracy. Participants in the event include members of the Thai parliament from various political parties – both government and opposition, academics and civil society organizations.

In this event, MPs expressed interest in forming an unofficial working group that will bring together MPS with a strong commitment to human rights from as many fractions of the house of representatives as possible. The participants in the event also exchanged their opinions regarding the roles of MPs and possible strategies in protecting human rights and strengthening democracy both in Thailand and in the region. Among other issues discussed during the event, climate change and human rights concerning the issue have been identified as a possible unifying topic for all political parties in Thailand.

The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights and the Hanns Seidel Foundation hope that a working group of MPs will be established at the end of this series of discussions. We believe that gatherings of like-minded MPs in an environment where dialogues are facilitated and specialized knowledge and expertise concerning human rights are provided will help strengthen their mandate and consolidate their endeavors in ensuring human rights in Thailand as well as in ASEAN.
