The conference discussed the transition process in Myanmar as well as the current situation of the country. A focus was laid on key-aspects of the democratization in Myanmar, such as the role of the military and the civil society, aspects of economic development, international aspects, religion-cultural factors, centralization, decentralization and autonomy as well as the media and the public sphere. The academic experts came from Myanmar, Germany, China and Japan. After the presentations the participants engaged in discussions.
The conference started with opening remarks by the University’s Rector Dr. Pho Thaung and Hanns- Seidel-Foundations’ Programme Manager Leander Ketelhodt. A key note speech was given by Dr. Thant Myint Oo on “Towards an international history of Myanmar’s transition.”
