After the National Action Plan for the Sustainable Development Agenda was introduced in May 2016, line ministries have made various efforts to integrate the content and targets of the Vietnamese Sustainable Development Goals (VSDGs) into their sectoral plans. To join hands with this common effort, the General Statistics Office (GSO) had worked with different development partners to develop the sustainable development statistical indicators to monitor the progress of the country in implementing the its sustainability agenda until 2030.
The set of statistical indicators for sustainable development consists of 158 indicators, of which 140 must be achieved by 2019, the remaining 18 by 2025. Data will be compiled from various sources including censuses, surveys and administrative data to optimize the existing data collection system. Still, the capacity and methodology challenges are foreseeable.
GSO General Director Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam stressed the great financial and technical support of International Organizations including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Unicef, the GIZ and the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
The Hanns Seidel Foundation also supported GSO to publish a handbook of Statistical Indicators for Sustainable Development in Vietnam.
In alignment with this monitoring framework, the Roadmap for Implementation of Vietnam SDGs, which was drafted by the Ministry of Planning and Investment with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation, will eventually be finalized this year. The Roadmap will set out clear steps and milestones for implementing 115 VSDG targets. This reflects continuous effort by the Hanns Seidel Foundation since 2015 to contribute to the implementation of the Agenda 2030 in Vietnam.
