The aim of the excursion was to provide the participants with further ideas and experiences of responsible and sustainable tourism in order to be able to improve tourism in Thandaung Gyi and to handle challenges in the management structure. Therefore the group visited several tourism businesses around Inle Lake, in Ywar Ngan and Kalaw and for example got insights into Shan paper production, organic farming or developments in the area of waste water treatments.

Furthermore they attended a cooking class where they got to know the local cuisine and fusion kitchen and also visited workshops, floating farms and weaving houses. The meetings with Inle Heritage Foundation and Kalaw Tourism Organisation gave them the opportunity to get in touch with tourism experts directly.

The feedback of the members was consistently positive. They are looking forward to talk about the trip with the rest of TTDWG and to talk about advantages of community commitment in regional development for the destination’s improvement and success.

The study trip gave them an overview about the possibilities and chances of an integrative form of tourism and was perceived as highly effective as the group actively participated instead of elaborating something in theory.
